Two years ago when the Nobel Conference was the /Legacy of Einstein,
/Jim Gates, John S. Toll Professor of Physics at the University of
Maryland, was part of our distinguished panel. We are fortunate to have
Jim back at Gustavus this year as Rydell Professor, co-teaching a
general education course on String Theory. On Thursday, March 29 at
7:30 pm, he will be giving a public lecture entitled "SUSY and the Lord
of the Rings" in Nobel Auditorium on the Gustavus campus. See the
abstract below for more details about the subject. I hope that you will
join us if you can.

Abstract:
The last decade in physics has led to a dizzying array of new ideas
including one called supersymmetry. If valid, Nature may begin to reveal
"superpartners" with names like selectrons, squarks, sneutrinos and
winos. What are these things? How does humanity learn more about them?
In Geneva, Switzerland nearing completion is a ring that will help rule
on them all. It is an accelerator called the LHC for "Large Hadron
Collider." Come to this lecture and see if you wish to join this
Fellowship of the Ring.
